Storage bed: what the listed price really includes

A storage bed is a bed base whose platform lifts on gas struts to reveal a large storage space underneath — enough to replace an entire chest of drawers. But pay attention to what the price actually covers: depending on the model, you're buying the storage base alone, or a complete pack with mattress and headboard.

At La Maison Convertible, outside of promotions, the storage base alone falls roughly within this range depending on the finish and size:

Range 140 x 190 160 x 200 180 x 200
Entry-level€790€910€1,090
Mid-range€1,380€1,490€1,690
Premium€2,300€2,450€2,700

The mattress, meanwhile, is budgeted separately: this calculator prices the storage base, not the mattress. One detail worth noting when choosing it: it shouldn't be too thick or too heavy, otherwise the chest becomes hard to open and the gas struts wear out faster. A thickness of 20 to 25 cm remains the right compromise — unless you go for the electric opening, which handles even the heaviest mattresses without any trouble.

As for the opening, there are two options depending on the space around the bed. Front opening lifts the platform from the foot of the bed: handy when the sides are against a wall. Side opening opens the chest from the side. This choice depends on your room, not your budget: the price is the same.

Then there's the option that really changes daily use: electric opening. A motor raises and lowers the platform at the push of a button, effortlessly and smoothly. On a large bed with a thick mattress, or when your back can't keep up, this is what makes the difference between a chest you open every day and one you stop opening altogether. Budget around €800 extra.

Chest height is the real storage dial. With standard height, you can already fit duvets, pillows and linens. With XL height, the box gains several extra centimeters of usable depth and passes the 800 to 1,000 liter mark on a 160 or 180, the equivalent of about twenty cabin suitcases. Budget around €350 for the XL upgrade. In return, the bed is taller and bulkier: on a 180 x 200, measure your hallways, doors and stairs before ordering.

Good news on the extra costs: delivery and installation in the room are included. The delivery team drops off the furniture, assembles it, and takes the packaging away with them. The only extras to plan for: the eco-participation fee (a few euros) and a possible access surcharge if your home is on a high floor without an elevator.

Frequently asked questions

Not always. The "storage base" is sold on its own, without a mattress. The "pack" or "set" includes the storage base, the mattress, and often the headboard. Check the product title before buying, and add the mattress to your budget if you're going with the base alone.
Aim for a thickness of 20 to 25 cm and a reasonable weight. A mattress that's too heavy makes the chest hard to open and wears out the gas struts faster. Pocket springs ventilate well and distribute weight evenly; memory foam offers good support. The slatted base ensures air circulation, which helps prevent moisture buildup inside the chest.
Between 800 and 1,000 liters on a 160 x 200 or 180 x 200, depending on the chest height. It's the ideal space for duvets, pillows, out-of-season clothing or bulky items. The deeper the chest, the more you can store — some models reach 33 cm of storage depth.
Yes. Delivery and installation in the room of your choice are included. You schedule the appointment, the installers deliver and assemble the storage bed, then leave with all the packaging. All that's left to budget for is the eco-participation fee and, if applicable, a surcharge if access requires a high floor without an elevator.
It depends on the space around the bed. Front opening lifts the platform from the foot of the bed: handy if the sides are against a wall. Side opening opens the chest from the side, useful when there's no room at the foot of the bed. The price doesn't change, only the clearance needed to open it differs.
No. It gives a broad estimate, excluding promotions, based on the price ranges used by La Maison Convertible. The final price depends on the model, finish, size, chest height and options selected. Use it to frame your budget before checking product pages or visiting a store.
